Double-post day! Last post was a long’un, so this is a quick read!
For Violet’s capstone project with the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music, she recorded some studio demos. We were blessed to get to play with her on one (really, two) track(s), which we’ve posted for you to stream and download, for free, on the new artist-owned co-op platform Subvert.fm.
Subvert officially launches Tuesday, May 12, but we applied as founding members and got to go ahead and upload the track. Why Subvert and not [insert other platform here]? I promised a short post, so no manifesto, but, as musicians of the old time tradition, we lean toward collaboration and community ownership over top-down models. You can read more about Subvert here to learn about how their model structures power in a fairer way, shared among its member-owners.
(And, of course, we believe that the music you listen to should belong to you! Which is why you can download it and keep it forever! Stream it! Save it! Whatever!)
Anyway, we love making music together and we love you! It’s fitting that our first studio recording is our favorite two songs to open sets with – The Cuckoo (Clarence Ashley version) and Ain’t No Grave. And our endless thanks to Thomas Albert, the MSU professor and musician who mic’d and mixed us so nicely. Your microphone catalog-cabinet is beautiful.

Be well! See you soon. ๐
