Violet and the Newsroom is an acoustic folk string band out of central and eastern Kentucky. Violet (Lexington, Kentucky) primarily plays fiddle, Anabel (Carlisle, Kentucky) primarily plays bass, and Clay (Frankfort, Kentucky) primarily plays mountain dulcimer. All three are vocalists and multi-instrumentalists.
Violet, Anabel, and Clay met at Morehead State University as members of the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music’s old time band ensemble under the instruction of Nathan Kiser (and with fellow musician and friend Ash Culp). They continue to play and learn old time fiddle tunes alongside country, folk, and alternative indie songs.
(Why “Violet and the Newsroom“? First, because the band is fiddle-forward (Hooray, Violet!) and, second, because Anabel and Clay are both public radio reporters for two different stations. Radio lives!)
